Black Brits

Welcome to UNION BLACKS a portrait of Black Brits.

The exhibition focuses on African and Afro-Caribbean personalities who have lived in Britain, and have contributed in different ways to the British experience. Surf the site and experience the richness and vibrancy of the Black British heritage. The culture comes alive in this magnificent exhibition, filled with interesting historical accounts and fascinating portraits. Explore the portraits, test your knowledge by doing a quiz, watch the videos and hear first hand the thoughts of those who have helped shape and contributed much to the society. And donʼt miss out on the words of the personalities in the quotes. We hope you will find UNION BLACKS an enlightening experience.

This is not an attempt to separate Black British culture from dominant British culture, but rather to say that they are both inter-link - "Britain's history is intertwined with the history of Africa, Asia and other regions of the world, which goes back hundreds of years."

UNION BLACKS has had solo exhibitions in London at Borders UK, Centreprise, Fairfield Halls in Croydon, and the Black Cultural Archives. It has also featured in group exhibitions at the National Portrait Gallery, Beatrice Royal Museum, Gallery Kaleidoscope, Moving Here and on the BBC Race and Gender documentary. The flags and some portraits have been on book covers and as a backdrop for events.
